Jiri Jormakka is the alumnus of the year at Karelia UAS Jiri Jormakka, a year 2014 business economics graduate from Karelia University of Applied Sciences, has been selected as the alumnus of the year. Jormakka has been actively involved in the marketing of Karelia UAS and has been cooperating with Karelia UAS in marketing courses both as a lecturer and as a commissioner of assignments. Cooperation with the students and staff of Karelia UAS has been active. I have gained some great experiences and learned a lot through this cooperation. I hope I have been able to provide as much good to Karelia UAS myself, states Jormakka. The alumnus of the year was now selected for the first time at Karelia UAS. The staff and students of Karelia UAS had the chance to nominate candidates and the final selection was made by Karelia UAS alumnus team. The alumnus of the year was awarded at the Karelia UAS year 2017-2018 opening ceremony on Tikkarinne campus. Now that Karelia UAS celebrates its 25th anniversary, we wanted to start completely new traditions and the selection of the alumnus is one of these traditions. The selection criteria emphasised e.g. cooperation with the UAS, and positive marketing of one’s own education and Karelia UAS, states President Petri Raivo. The word alumnus (plural alumni) refers to all students graduated from Karelia UAS and the previous North Karelia University of Applied Sciences/North Karelia Polytechnic as well as our international exchange students. The aim of alumni activities is to promote the connection between Karelia UAS and working life and to support the emergence of cooperation between students and local businesses. Karelia UAS alumni can, for example, work as expert lecturers in study units, invite student groups for study excursions at their workplaces, provide students with internships, projects and thesis topics, and act as mentors preparing students for working life.
