Safety Guide

If you have noticed

• a safety risk or defect,
• a dangerous site or situation,
• a close call situation,
• suspicious or threatening behaviour

inform the Karelia UAS Safety Group here.

In the event of fire, injury, sudden attack of illness, accident, or violence emergency number is 112.

Making an emergency call:

• Tell your name and give the exact address and phone number.
• Tell the emergency response centre briefly what happened.
• Answer any questions asked and follow the instructions received.
• Inform the emergency response centre on how and by whom the rescuers will be guided to the scene.
• Do not hang up before you get permission to do so.
• Arrange guidance for the rescuers to be able to find the site of emergency and make sure they will have a free access to the scene.
• Redial 112, if the circumstances change.

Asses the situation

Seizure or other sudden illness or accident resulting in unconsciousness or unresponsiveness

• call 112,
• explain what happened,
• give the exact address,
• follow the instructions and set your phone to speaker mode if needed,
• stay on the line until you are given permission to end the call.

Does the patient breath?

• Lay the patient down on his/her back.
• Open the airways.
• Bend the head backwards.
• Make sure the airways are open, lift the chin up from the chest.
• Monitor breathing: do you feel the air flow and does the chest go up/down.
• Turn an unconscious person who is breathing onto their side and monitor their breathing regularly.
• If the patient is unconscious, but breating, place him/her on their side in a recovery position and follow their breathing. In case of abnormal breathing or no air flow, start cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation

• Expose the chest if needed.
• Place the palm of one hand in the centre of the patient’s breastbone and the palm of your other hand on top of the first.
• Give 30 chest compressions with your elbows straight. Press down firmly and quickly to achieve a downwards movement of about 5cm and aim for a rate of compression of about 100-120 per minute.
• Continue with artificial respiration.
• Open the airways again.
• Bend the head backwards and lift up the chin, and pinch the nostrils shut with your thumb and forefinger to prevent leakage of air.
• Seal your own mouth over the patient’s mouth and breathe into his/her mouth twice. Check if the chest rises as you breathe into their mouth to see if the lungs are adequately inflating.
• If the patient does not wake up or breathe normally, continue cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency help arrives.

Bleeding

• Stop the bleeding.
• Raise the injured body part if needed.
• Lay the patient down and try to stop the bleeding with e.g. a piece of clothing.
• If the bleeding does not stop, apply a pressure bandage to the wound.
• If the bleeding still continues, apply a tourniquet above the wound, call 112.

Shock

• Provide first aid for shock (pale patient, disoriented behaviour, sweating and cold skin).
• Treat any cause of shock, such as bleeding. Call Emergency number 112.
• Raise the patient’s legs. Insulate the patient from cold. Do not leave the patient unattended. 

Wait for an ambulance to arrive

• If the patient is unconscious but breathing, place him/her on their side in the recovery position.
• Keep an eye on the patient and his/her condition, particularly breathing.
• Check and dry up any possible bleeding and monitor any signs of shock.

In case of fire:

• Rescue yourself and those in immediate danger. Warn other people.
• Call 112, tell your name and the exact address of the fire scene.
• Extinguish the fire with first aid firefighting equipment, confine the fire from spreading by closing doors and windows, direct people to the nearest exit, equip the door you exited with an evacuation sign.
• The role of a floor warden is assigned to Karelia’s staff. In the event of a fire, put on a green safety vest. Safety vests are available in the corridors of the campuses along with instructions for the area to be checked. The floor warder must consider their own safety and limited presence in the building during a fire.
• Guide the fire department to the scene of the fire.
• Assembly area: follow the signs to the designated assembly area on yourcampus and make sure all people have exited the building.

Use of elevators is prohibited in case of fire.

In case of threatening behaviour:

• Stay calm, do not try to provoke the person threatening you, keep your voice calm
• Keep a safe distance to the threatening person
• Try to calm down the person threatening you, talk clearly, be brief
• Act in a purposeful manner
• Keep scissors and sharp items off the table
• Try to get some help, make up an excuse to leave the room
• If needed, call 112 for help.
