Values, attitudes and culture

(Responsible person Jaana Tolkki)

At our university, accessibility is an ongoing conversation and a shared commitment. We foster an atmosphere that champions equality, while promoting a strong sense of community and solidarity. Every student’s individuality and diversity are valued, and their well-being is a priority. Students have the power to influence their own studies and contribute to the development of teaching and university operations. The voices of both students and staff are heard, and everyone is encouraged to take an active role in shaping our academic community.

Goal and Actions 2025–27

Basic understanding of accessibility for all staff members

  • Include the accessibility plan in new staff onboarding (INTRO).
  • Integrate the accessibility plan into supervisor training.
  • Assess the need for additional training for staff as part of the accessibility survey.
  • Supervisors and team leaders conduct a review of their teams to identify development needs in accessibility competence.

The eight areas of accessibility are clearly embedded as cross-cutting themes in Karelia’s strategic framework

  • Develop a unified approach by aligning the Code of Conduct, Equality and Non-Discrimination Plan, Safe Space Principles poster, Workplace Development Plan, Sustainable Development and Responsibility Program, and Accessibility Plan to support each other.
  • Ensure that the different areas of accessibility are transparently integrated into Karelia’s internal and external plans, guidelines, and development projects by adding relevant accessibility icons and the word “accessibility” to these icons, and linking related documents together on the website.
