House Rules for Safer Space at Karelia
In Karelia, we operate as a community, together and equally, each of us boldly being ourselves. The House Rules for safer Space are used in Karelia’s premises, events and online platforms. Every member of the community can contribute to creating a safer space.
1. We listen and learn
Everyone has a right to be heard and to participate in discussions. We approach new topics, individuals and perspectives with open minds, as opportunities to learning new things. Ask questions to increase your own understanding.
2. We respect
We respect individual autonomy and engage in respectful conversations. We allow room for different opinions. Discriminatory attitudes are not considered opinions. We remember that people have different limits, for example when it comes to humour. We are especially careful about what we post and write on social media.
3. We value
We respect everyone’s right to self-identification and appreciate diversity. We enable a sense of belonging and inclusion for all.
4. We intervene
If we encounter harassment, inappropriate behaviour or conduct that makes others uncomfortable, we will not remain a bystander. Only by actively intervening we will make the space safer. We offer support to those who have experienced inappropriate treatment.
5. We allow
It is human to make mistakes. We may unintentionally offend or speak thoughtlessly, for example by using a word that is offensive to others. We point out such behaviour in a constructive manner without blaming. We stop or modify our behaviour in interaction if requested by others. We apologise.
