Tuition fees

Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA area degree students

Bachelor’s degree programmes taught in English have tuition fees. Degree students who are not citizens of countries of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland and who have started their studies 1 August 2017 and onwards are required to pay the tuition fee.

If you are a Finnish citizen, you are not required to pay tuition fees.

At Karelia UAS the tuition fee is 5 500 euros for a study year. The fee for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration completed in 3.5‑years is 19 250 euros and for Bachelor of Engineering completed in 4 years 22 000 euros.

Completion of the Finnish language proficiency levels A2 and B1
Achieving the A2 level in Finnish language is possible by actively participating in the Finnish language studies according to curriculum.

Achieving the B1 level requires a student commitment and independent study of the Finnish language. Karelia requires students to be active in developing their Finnish language skills and encourages students to aim to level B1 by supporting and offering voluntary Finnish language studies in addition to compulsory studies.

Only one scholarship/academic year is available for completing the Finnish language proficiency, during the second and third study year. If student completes both skill levels in the same year, the second skill level complementation will be take into account to the following year. Also student’s credits exceeding 55 credits/academic year will be taken into account in next academic year’s credit accumulation.

Language level assessment is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (CEFR).

Scholarship programme for the academic year 2019 — 2020

Karelia UAS provides fee-paying students with scholarships.

If a student does not graduate during 3,5 years, s/he has a right to study one year immediately following this set of duration without a separate permit. Student is required to pay the tuition fee 2750€ / semester.

•    In order to receive the scholarship, the student is required to submit the scholarship application according to the instructions and to provide proof of compliance with the awarding criteria.

Special issues

If the student falls ill and must be absent from the studies for a semester or an academic year, s/he can transfer his/her payment to the following academic year after providing a medical certificate on the illness.

If a student who is about to start his/her studies at Karelia UAS becomes ill before starting the studies and has to be absent the first academic year, s/he can apply for reimbursement of the tuition fee s/he has already paid for. The student needs to present a medical certificate to be eligible for reimbursement. If the application has been made and the medical certificate submitted before the beginning of the first academic year, the whole tuition fee will be reimbursed.

If the student is compelled to discontinue his/her studies based on her maternity leave or his/her own or a family member’s severe illness, half of the paid tuition fee for the academic year in question will be refunded, if the studies are discontinued no later than the in the halfway of an academic year. The student is responsible for providing proof of the reason for the discontinuation (medical certificate). The tuition fee will not be refunded without a medical certificate. Other type of discontinuation of studies does not entitle to the restoration of the tuition fee.

As described above, the same principle applies to transfer students; if the student transfers to another institution no later than in the hallway of an academic year, half of the tuition fee will be refunded.

Students paying Open UAS fees will be charged with degree education tuition fees as they have the eligibility to apply for degree studies (pathway students), i.e. as they have fully completed one year of studies.
