Achieving the B1 level requires a student commitment and independent study of the Finnish language. Karelia requires students to be active in developing their Finnish language skills and encourages students to aim to level B1 by supporting and offering voluntary Finnish language studies in addition to compulsory studies.

Only one scholarship/academic year is available for completing the Finnish language proficiency, during the second and third study year. If student completes both skill levels in the same year, the second skill level complementation will be take into account to the following year. Also student’s credits exceeding 55 credits/academic year will be taken into account in next academic year’s credit accumulation.

Language level assessment is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (CEFR).

Scholarship programme for the academic year 2019 – 2020

Karelia UAS provides fee-paying students with scholarships.

Early-bird scholarship: A first-year students may apply for a scholarship, which is 50% of the tuition fee for the academic year, as soon as s/he has accepted his/her study place. The scholarship can only be granted when the applicant has accepted the study place and paid half of the tuition fee for the academic year (2,750 €) within 10 days after s/he has accepted his/her study place. The amount of the scholarship will be reduced from the spring term tuition fee (due by January 2020).

Karelia UAS will provide successful students with scholarship based on performance in their studies. All students who are charged for the tuition fee, are eligible. The scholarship is conditional and it will be paid retrospectively. The student will be awarded 50 % reduction of the tuition fee for the next academic year, when completing 55 ECTS credits in a study year with the minimum grade average of 2 (scale: satisfactory 1-5 excellent). In the 3,5th year, the graduating student will receive the last part of the scholarship as a grant when finishing the studies in the recommended set duration of studies (5 semesters, 3.5 years).

Special issues

If the student falls ill and must be absent from the studies for a semester or an academic year, s/he can transfer his/her payment to the following academic year after providing a medical certificate on the illness.

If a student who is about to start his/her studies at Karelia UAS becomes ill before starting the studies and has to be absent the first academic year, s/he can apply for reimbursement of the tuition fee s/he has already paid for. The student needs to present a medical certificate to be eligible for reimbursement. If the application has been made and the medical certificate submitted before the beginning of the first academic year, the whole tuition fee will be reimbursed.

If the student is compelled to discontinue his/her studies based on her maternity leave or his/her own or a family member’s severe illness, half of the paid tuition fee for the academic year in question will be refunded, if the studies are discontinued no later than the in the halfway of an academic year. The student is responsible for providing proof of the reason for the discontinuation (medical certificate). The tuition fee will not be refunded without a medical certificate. Other type of discontinuation of studies does not entitle to the restoration of the tuition fee.

As described above, the same principle applies to transfer students; if the student transfers to another institution no later than in the hallway of an academic year, half of the tuition fee will be refunded.

Students paying Open UAS fees will be charged with degree education tuition fees as they have the eligibility to apply for degree studies (pathway students), i.e. as they have fully completed one year of studies.
